Whether you’re a loquacious logophile or the strong and silent type, anyone can boost their vocabulary and have fun doing it with the right selection of daily word games.
As much as we love leveling up gear and taking on baddies, this genre explores diphthongs and dialects instead of dungeons. But there are still plenty of thrills to be had, thanks to the ever-increasing variety of free word games on the market.
On that note, let us give you a head start in finding your favorite titles with this list of the 12 best daily word games.
Word Wipe
Featuring a familiar yet refreshing fusion of game mechanics from titles like Tetris and Scrabble, Word Wipe tasks players with a time-sensitive mission: to clear as many lines as possible before it’s too late.
At the start of each level, the game board is chock-full of letter tiles. Weave together words by connecting adjoining letter tiles, and they’ll disappear, allowing more to slide in from the top. Don’t get too lost chasing those nine- and ten-letter bombs! (Oh, and there are actual bombs in play as well.)
Scramble Words
The brain is a funny, fickle thing sometimes, and Scramble Words brings out this quirkiness in an engaging and addictive way. Your objective in this level-based daily word game is to use the letters provided to you to fill in the missing words on the screen. As you create words (even if they don’t fill in the blanks), you will fill up the bonus meter and earn hint letters. Clear each level as quickly as you can for maximum points.
Think it sounds easy? Hent sevol hist!
Arkadium’s Fill-Ins
The best way to summarize Arkadium’s Fill-Ins is to picture your Sunday crossword being sucked into a black hole and spit out in a different dimension.
Instead of knowing where the answer is supposed to go and guessing to solve the clue, you already know the answers but have no idea where to put them. The whole game area is blank, save for one or two letters, and you have to build from there. It’s nutty, and we love it.
Spelling Bee
Who says you can’t catch up on current events and hone your wordsmithing skills simultaneously?
You can do just that at Spelling Bee, a deceptively tricky word game by the New York Times.
In front of you sits a honeycomb-shaped assortment of hexagonal letter tiles. All you have to do is make as many words as possible, but there’s a kicker: you must use the middle letter every time.
Outspell
Pair up against a virtual opponent of your chosen difficulty, take a good look at the six tiles in front of you, and make the best word you possibly can in Outspell.
This turn-based, one-on-one word game awards points for every letter of every word. The game board is dotted with tantalizing x2 and x3 multipliers, just waiting for you to land on them, score big, and secure that win.
Hurdle
Craving a test of creativity and wordsmithing skills, all wrapped up into one hard-to-put-down game?
Hurdle is a simplistic yet tricky word game that marries these concepts beautifully.
The premise is straightforward: you have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Throw out a blind guess and use the color-coded hints (green means right letter, right place; yellow means right letter, wrong place; grey means the letter is not in the word) to tweak each guess until you nail it.
Connections
We simply have to return to the New York Times once more to shout out Connections, a game less involved with spelling and more with finding the common thread between groups of seemingly unrelated words.
Choose four words you think belong together from the four-by-four arrangement of word tiles, and submit them as a match. Miss the mark too many times, and you’re out.
Daily Word Search
What more needs to be said? It’s free, easy to play, and an excellent way to kill some time while giving your brain a workout.
Search through a grid of letters to find words arranged vertically, diagonally, horizontally, and even backward. Daily Word Search earns a spot on our list for its fun themes, satisfying visuals, and just the right amount of difficulty.
Word Clash
Word games may not be your first thought when craving something a bit more competitive, but Word Clash is changing that in a major way.
Battle against real online opponents and the clock as you take turns trying to score the most points by stringing together bigger and fancier words from the provided letters. It’s a head-to-head battle that feels like the ultimate verbal jousting match.
Arkadium’s Codeword
The bad news? This twist on traditional crossword puzzles gives you zero clues to solve aside from a couple of starting letters.
The good news? Every letter you guess correctly appears not only in the word you’re completing, but in all other instances across the board. Arkadium’s Codeword makes you think big picture and little picture at the same time, which is exactly why we count it among our favorite word games.
Syllacrostic
Spelling games we know and word scrambles are also common staples, but chopping up words into syllables? There’s a lot of untapped potential there, and Syllacrostic beautifully capitalizes on this more niche approach to word games.
Read the minimalist clues carefully, check your list of syllables, and string them together to form the correct answer. You’ll never look at words the same way again!
Ridella
Last, but most certainly not least, is Ridella, the self-revealing riddle that playfully challenges you at every step. Each level is a riddle, and each riddle is four lines.
When starting, you can only see the first line and must guess to solve the riddle. You reveal another line of the riddle with each wrong answer until you get it. We love how this game makes you think one way and then throws a wild twist at the end.
